5 Healthy Habits to Start Today


Doesn't it feel like being healthy is such work? It surely can feel this way as we begin to change our lifestyle. There is no need for it to be over cumbersome, just begin slowly and give yourself grace for where you are at.


Even if you do feel you are at a healthy point in your life at this moment, there are certainly short periods of time where you fall off the wagon (no one is perfect) or sometimes you give so much you forget to take care of yourself (hello moms, speaking to you out there). However, in order to really accomplish all you want out of life, give to others and love to your fullest capacity - you have to fill your own cup.


Throughout my journey so far, I've found that true health began for me personally with a clean diet and removing as much toxicity and negativity around me.


Here are a few simple ideas to help you get started:


1. Try a short term cleanse or commit yourself to 14 days of eating only organic food.


Keep three healthy foods, habits or recipes you liked from said cleanse or 14-day commitment and put them into your daily or weekly routine. For example, instead of grabbing that cup of coffee upon rising, try warm water with lemon instead (or at least before the cup of joe). A very simple first step if you feel you aren't ready for a 14-day commitment would be to only buy organic produce from the dirty dozen list according to EWG.


Repeat above as needed.


2. Grow a small organic garden of your own.


Herbs (like parsley, sage, and rosemary) and greens (such as spinach, kale and romaine lettuce) are easy to grow. Don't worry about starting from seed or think you have to take a gardening class! Just start with a few potted herb plants, and buy the plants from a local greenhouse nursery or farm. This is also a great way to get your kids involved - my son loves to water the plants or pick fresh veggies or herbs from the garden when it's time to cook!


3. Change your personal care and home products.


Begin slowly by replacing a product with a healthier version once you run out of your current product. Start with laundry detergent, toothpaste, hand/body soap, deodorant and shampoo/conditioner. These are products everyone uses daily. Start a list of more products you or your family use daily and continue replacing with healthier, non-toxic options.


4. Exercise your mind, body, and soul.


We need to physically exercise (everyone knows this), but also feed your soul with passions that burn deep inside you. Start a journal, take an art class, or start a new fitness routine (in-home or at a studio). Make a list of what makes you happy or feel good inside and go from there!


5. Get outside or into nature daily.


Grounding with nature has many positive effects on the body. Even if that means taking a deep breathe outside your front door in the morning while holding your cup of coffee, or walking barefoot in a patch of grass for two minutes while meditating and letting your kids run around outside.



It may seem overwhelming to start out at first, but you can make simple healthy changes you need in order to get the life you deserve. It doesn't have to be a drastic change, it's simply making a conscious (and maybe subconscious) decision to change the direction life is taking you if you don't like the path you currently are on. Start with one small healthy habit (baby steps) and watch how you start to transform!
