If you haven't read my previous post, September 1st begins a #LocalThirty challenge created by farmer turned foodie Andrea Bemis. I was inspired by her to begin a local challenge here in the Hudson Valley.
The challenge is this: eat local food/ingredients for 30 days within a 200 mile radius, and only 10 cheats allowed. It can be one meal per day or every meal. You make it your own. It is meant to be light-hearted, fun and the whole idea is to support local.
Here are the local sources I've researched to prep for the challenge.
*I'll be updating as I find more resources in the area. So if I missed any really great farms, local ingredients or markets please let me know! There are so many to mention but I tried picking a wide range.
Hudson Valley Resources:
I listed markets and grocery stores with locally produced foods first so you can try to pick up as many ingredients in one location:
Local Grocery Stores (Various)
*The below are sorted by food/ingredient. These farms and farm stores may sell a variety of items too so you can pick up more than one type of food or ingredient below as well. Your best bet would be to find the closest in your own area and see what they sell. Make a list of what you will need and try to meal prep for the week ahead whenever possible. This will help you save money and time.
Kriemheld Dairy Farm (grass-fed butter)
Coffee (a cheat; but can find/support locally roasted)
Dairy (Milk, Yogurt, Cream, Half and Half, Sour Cream, Cheese)
Brookby Farm (raw cow's milk, cheese, farm store)
Coach Farm (goat milk cheese and yogurt)
Edgewick Farm (goat milk and cheese)
Hoofprint & Cheese Co. (raw goat milk and cheese)
Hudson Valley Fresh (pasteurized cow's milk products)
Old Ford Farm (raw cow's milk)
Shunpike Dairy (raw cow's milk)
Sprout Creek Farm (goat & cow milk cheeses)
...SO many more! View the farmer's markets above or just look up www.localharvest.org for your area.
*Thank goodness for 200mi. radius for this one! I've seen one of these brands in Brookby Farm store in Dover Plains for sale!
